"Wait up!" a voice sounded in the darkness. A dark shape went into view at the top of a hill.
"Finally." Darkeyes mewed, uninterested. "Took him long enough."
"Oh, be quiet, Darkeyes." Wingfoot teased. She butted the large, black tom and laughed. "He's new at this." And she was right. Smallshadow died just a few days ago and Soottail took over as ForestClan medicine cat.
"Soottail!" she called. "Over here!"
He raced up to the other medicine cats, panting hard. "Sorry I'm late..." he mewed, his voice harsh and tired. "Really sorry." he looked at his paws as he waited for the older cats to rebuke him.
Darkeyes turned around to face the shimmering pool and the cave just beyond it. "Just be on time next time!" he snarled. He started for the ShimmeringCave with an even trot.
"Don't mind him!" Cherryfur mewed happily, licking Soottail's ears. "Let's get going though. We don't want to make him even more mad." she laughed, amusement showing in her eyes.
Wingfoot dipped her head in agreement. "Come on, Soottail." she mewed, racing up to Darkeyes. She butted Darkeyes again and he stared at her, a mix of thoughtfulness and anger.
Cherryfur walked side by side with Soottail. "I have a bad feeling about this..." she whispered.”What do you mean?" Soottail asked, confusion showing in his amber eyes.
"You'll see..." she whispered, walking in the ShimmeringCave.
Pondpaw woke up to a ginger face staring at her. "What do you want, Firepaw?" she snarled.
"What? Can't your own brother say hi to his sister in the morning?" he laughed. He cuffed her ears with a long, ginger paw.
"Go away! I need more sleep." she growled, dodging his blow.
"Ok. Ok." he mewed, backing off. "But Cherryfur wants you." he laughed and ran out of the apprentice den.
"What?" she yowled, leaping to her paws. "Firepaw!" she growled. She sat down and gave her chest a quick lick before leaving the den.
She walked through the cave to her mentor, a beautiful ginger tabby she-cat. "Yes, Cherryfur?" she asked, half-ashamed.
"Could you go down to the PebbleClan border to get some catnip?" she asked, tilting her head to one side. That motion made it almost impossible to resist.
"Sure! Should I take a warrior with me?" she asked.
"Yes. Take Adderheart." she mewed, returning to her work sorting her herbs.
Adderheart? Just my luck! She thought. Adderheart hated her. Not that she cared, she hated him as well. "Alright. I'll ask him." she sighed.
"That's my apprentice!" she mewed, licking Pondpaw's ears. "Thanks!"
"No problem." she mewed half-heartedly. "I'll bring back a lot of catnip." she promised.
"Good. Now, off you go!" she laughed. She returned to her work and dismissed Pondpaw with a flick of her tail.
She nodded and raced off to find Adderheart. She saw him sharing tongues with Lightshadow, a pretty light brown she-cat. "Um... Adderheart?" she asked.
He turned around to face Pondpaw. "What?" he asked, sounding quite bored.
Lightshadow turned to Pondpaw. "Hello Pondpaw." she mewed, dipping her head to the young apprentice.
She looked at Lightshadow. "Hello, Lightshadow." she mewed, her spirit rising. It was just so easy to be around Lightshadow.
"Are you going to answer my question or not?" he snarled. "Adderheart! Be nicer!" Lightshadow mewed; shocked he would take such a voice with the medicine cat apprentice.
"I'll do what I want." he mewed, unashamed. "So, what is it, Pondpaw?" he asked.
"Cherryfur wants you to go with me to the PebbleClan border. She needs more catmint." she mewed, looking at her paws.
"Sure. Just let me finish my mouse." he meowed, turning his attention back to Lightshadow.
"Ok. I'll be in the apprentice den." she mewed, relieved that she was being dismissed.
Adderheart just snorted. Lightshadow laughed and mewed. "I'm due for a sunhigh patrol." she purred. "I better get going."
"Oh. Bye Lightshadow. Good luck." Pondpaw purred. "Thank you, Pondpaw." Lightshadow mewed, licking Pondpaw's ears.
"Bye." Adderheart mewed, the boredness returning to his voice.
"Then, I'll leave you to your mouse..." Pondpaw started, only to be cut off by Adderheart.
"I'll leave now." he decided. He stood up and stretched his legs out. "But you owe me for this." he whispered in her ear, a snarl by all other means.
"What? Why would I owe you?" she growled. "Cherryfur wants you to help me find catnip before the frost kills it all!"
"I know. I know." he sighed. "Let's just get this over with."
"Fine!" Pondpaw walked ahead of him, her tail lashing and fur bristling.
Adderheart sighed and followed her, easily covering the distance between him and Pondpaw with his long, muscular legs.
"Go away!" Pondpaw growled. She sprinted ahead of him.
He sighed. "Whatever." he mewed half-heartedly. "Just stay close! We're nearing the PebbleClan border!" he called. The pale gray apprentice just ignored him.
"Pondpaw! Wait!" he called, a panic surging through his voice.
She slowed down a bit. Adderheart sighed in relief. The relief lasted only a few seconds. "What are you doing on PebbleClan?" a dark, husky voice called.
"What? We're not on PebbleClan!" Adderheart snarled, racing up to Pondpaw. "You're lying!"
The shape stepped out from the darkness. A huge, black tom appeared with a smaller white she-cat and a flame-red apprentice. "Lying? Are you accusing me of lying?" he snarled.
"Yes I am!" Adderheart shot back. "Get your warriors away from MountainClan territory!"
The black tom, a warrior called Dusktail, leaped at Pondpaw. He bit her hind leg with all his strength.
"Get off of her!" Adderheart yowled, leaping at Dusktail. Dusktail yowled in rage as Pondpaw kicked his soft underbelly and Adderheart clawed his back. "Flarepaw! Get in here!" he yowled to his apprentice. He shoved Pondpaw to the ground and leaped off her. Flarepaw jumped on Pondpaw and raked his claws against her flank. She yowled in pain. "Pondpaw! Leave!" Adderheart yowled to her. "What will MountainClan be without their apprentice medicine cat?"
Flarepaw froze at those words. A look of desperation and hate glowed from his dark amber eyes. He backed off and dipped his head in an apology. "Sorry..." he muttered. Pondpaw looked at him with brimming eyes. "Thanks..." she purred.
"Go!" Adderheart snarled. He leaped on Flarepaw's back. Pondpaw's eyes widened in horror. "No!” she yowled. The fighting stopped.
Flarepaw stared at Pondpaw. She stopped Adderheart’s attack. But why? He shook his head and stood by Dusktail and Cloudfire. "Get off our territory." Dusktail growled. He and Cloudfire turned away from the MountainClan cats and headed back to camp. Flarepaw quickly followed, like a sulking mouse. He quietly walked into camp. He saw his brother, Mousepaw.
"Flarepaw! What happened?" he called, walking towards his brother.
"We met Adderheart and Pondpaw on patrol. Nothing special." he sighed. "Nothing special at all."
"Sure. Then why did Dusktail and Cloudfire go straight to Thornstar?" he teased. "Tell me all about it!"
"Fine. Dusktail attacked Pondpaw and Adderheart got mad and attacked Dusktail. Dusktail yowled at me and told me to fight, so I attacked Pondpaw... not knowing she was MountainClan's medicine cat apprentice." he gasped for breath before continuing. "Adderheart pulled me off of Pondpaw and she yowled 'Stop!'. Everyone stopped fighting and we left."
"That's not as fun as I thought it was!" Mousepaw sighed. "I want to fight against MountainClan warriors! But I think I know why you sound sooooo troubled!" he laughed, butting his brother.
"What do you mean?" he growled, narrowing his eyes and glaring at his brother.
"Pondpaw is a really pretty she-cat." he laughed. Flarepaw's eyes widened with surprise.
"Me, like a MountainClan cat? No way!" he growled.
"Defensive are we?" he asked. Flarepaw leapt at Mousepaw. "Take that back!" he hissed.
"Fine, fine." Mousepaw mewed, laughing. "Just joking."
Flarepaw said nothing and walked in to the apprentice den. Mousepaw stood there, watching his brother leave.
"Mouse-brain." he murmured.
Flarepaw didn’t look back. He walked into his nest, circling three times before settling into the soft moss. He sighed and soon, sleep won him over.
GrassClan P.O.V.
"Skypaw?" Wingfoot called. "Can I tell you something?" she asked cautiously.
"Sure, Wingfoot!" Skypaw mewed happily, dipping her head in greeting and respect to her clan's medicine cat. "Anything you want."
"Alright then. This is going to sound really weird though..." she took a deep breath and started. "MoonClan told me this the night you were born."
"What does it mean? And what do I have to do with it?" she asked.
"I got that message the night you were born and your mother died giving birth to you. You fit some of the criteria." she mewed.
"What about Birdpaw? And Treepaw?" she cried. "They are my siblings as well! Why is it me how is in the prophecy! I would never do something as horrible as the one who will convince the other's to die. Nor will I have their blood on my paws!"
"Shh... Skypaw." she purred, gently trailing her tail across the young, white-blue she-cat's cheek. "Nothing bad will happen."
Skypaw shook her head. "I'm very sorry, Wingfoot." she mewed. "But what do you think it means?"
"I'm not sure..." she trailed off, lost in thought. "Just don't tell anyone!"
"I promise!" she mewed. "I swear in the name of MoonClan!"
"Good. You can leave now. I'm sure Nightcloud wants his apprentice back!" she laughed.
"Ok. Thanks Wingfoot. Thanks a lot." she mewed, dipping her head in respect.
"Anytime, Skypaw." Wingfoot purred.
ForestClan P.O.V.
Oakpaw woke to a bright sunny morning. He saw Tigerpaw and Leopardpaw were already out training, so he stood up and stretched. He gave his chest a few, quick licks before heading out of the den. "Hey! Hawkfeather!" he called to his mentor. "Are we going training?" he asked.
"Yes." she replied. "If all goes well, you might get your warrior ceremony tonight."
"Really? Ivystar approved?" Oakpaw asked his eyes wide with excitement.
"Of course, mouse-brain!" she laughed, her eyes bright with amusement.
"Nice! Are we leaving now?" he asked.
"After I eat!" Hawkfeather laughed. "But soon enough."
"Alright. What about Tigerpaw and Leopardpaw?" he asked. The other two apprentices were just a bit younger then him.
"Not yet. Between Stemtail's injuries and Brushtail's death, there has been so little training." she mewed thoughtfully. And she was right. Tigerpaw's mentor, Brushtail, died part way into his training and Leopardpaw's mentor, Stemtail, got hit by a twoleg monster. Stemtail had to stay in the with Soottail, ForestClan's medicine cat, for two moons.
"You're right." he sighed. "Well, I'll leave you to your mouse!" he mewed as he raced off to the clearing.
Oakpaw reached the clearing quickly. He looked around at the beautiful, frosty clearing. He saw a clump of catnip, unharmed by the frost and still a green, leafy color. He grabbed some and raced back to camp.
"Soottail! I found some catnip in the training area!" he called to the medicine cat.
"Catnip? Wow! Thanks Oakpaw." he praised. He took the clump of leafy greens from Oakpaw's mouth. He eyed Oakpaw nervously, as if something horrible was going to happen, because of him.
Oakpaw shook his head. What are you thinking? Like I would do something so horrible!
