A black cat padded into the clearing and looked around. She walked over to the warriors' den and called out to her mentor. Nothing and nobody answered. She sighed and padded out of the camp, hoping to hunt. She stopped and pricked her ears. She had heard something....... She slowly crept to where the sound was. She saw a mouse and pounced on it, killing it. All of a sudden she felt something slam into her side. She looked around, wondering what it was. It was a rogue. She quickly got up and dropped into a crouch, studying her opponent quickly. She pounced and as the other cat moved, she twisted her body and landed on the other cat's back. She clawed it and felt it struggle and finally threw her off. She went flying and hit a tree. As she was trying to regain her strength and sight, the other cat padded over to her and was about ot hit her when another stepped out from behind a tree. She watched as they talked and then the new cat walked over and grabbed her by the neck fur. She felt herself being lifted up. She struggled to break free, only to have the other cat slap her. She had been tired, so the movement made her fall asleep.......
Chapter one
Shadowpaw woke up and padded out of her den. She remembered a few seasons ago when she had been taken from her Clan. She had been taken to a place that was dark and quiet....... most of the time. There were sometimes sounds of cats screaming as the head rogue, Storm, hit them, trying to toughen them up. He had always hit her when she first came, his claws extended and left scars on her face.
She watched as Storm padded over to her. "What is your name?" He asked her.
Shadowpaw was surprised. She had lived here all this time and he still didn't know her name.
"I- I'm Shadowpaw." She meowed, her voice hoarse from thirst.
"Hmmm..... From now on, your name is Shadow." He said, and walked away.
Storm called to the other cats ad told them. Shadow padded to the other cats and listened to their converstations. They got quiet when they saw her. They hadn't really ever liked her. Didn't respect her. She sighed. She was alone in this place.
Shadow's head perked up. She had and idea. She would sneak away to her old Clan. She looked around to make sure no cat was watching and padded out of the camp. As she walked in the direction of her old Clan territory, she felt something wathing her and turned around. It was Flame, the cat that had attacked her when she was hunting all those seasons ago.
"So, where are you going?" He asked.
"Hunting." She lied.
"Mmmmm-hhmmm." He said, not believing her. He dragged her back to the camp.
OoOoOoOo
Shadow felt the claws go over her face again and again. She was being punished for trying to leave.
"Along with this, you will have no food for the next two days." Storm told her. "Now go!" He flicked his tail and Flame waited for her outside of the den. "Serves you right." He said to her. She looked up at him. She saw pity in his eyes though. He looked away. They reached the cave that she slept in. "I will leave you now." He said. "This is your fault." She said quietly as she walked inside.
"What?" he turned around to face her. "I said that it's your fault that i got in trouble." She said, not flinching when his expression turned to anger. "How is it my fault?!" He said, angry. "You told him." She said and turned around, walking to the end of the cave and curled up, falling asleep.
OoOoOoOo
Shadow watched as the other cats ate. She heard her belly growl at the sight of food. The other cats looked up at her, whispered to one another, and turned their back to her. She sighed and went back into the cave, planning what she was going to do tonight..........
Chapter two
'The plan will never work.' Shadow thought to herself. She got up and padded out of the cave. "What's going on?" She asked Flame when she saw the cats talking together. "We're attacking StormClan." He answered. "What?!" She exclaimed. "You have to come too." Storm said as he walked over to Flame and Shadow.
OoOoOoOoOo
Shadow walked into StormClan territory with the other rogues. She felt her belly flop as she scented the camp. "We're here." She whispered to the other cats. "Yesss." Storm said, drawing it out with a glint in his eyes. They bounded into the camp and started fighting, Shadow doing it more slowly. She saw her previous menter, Nightcloud.
"Hi Nightcloud!" She said, running over to him. He didn't recognize her and started fighting with her, Shadow not doing anything. "I-it's me! Shadowpaw!" She said. "S-Shadowpaw?" He stammered. "Ye-" She was interrupted by a slamming in her side. She whipped around and saw Stream, a silver she cat rogue. Shadow growled and pounced on her. She was knocked off almost a second after she landed.
"Traitor!" She heard Storm's voice and turned to see Nightcloud, watching with horror and tried to help her, but Stream held him back and they stood there, Nightcloud watching with sadness because no matter what he did, he couldn't get to her. She felt sharp teeth sink into her neck and started fading into blackness. "Shadowpaw!" Nightcloud yowled and ran over to her. "It's too late." She heard Flame's voive geting fainter and fainter until...
"Shadowpaw, wake up." She opened her eyes to see Fernheart, her mother who had been killed by a rogue seasons before she had been taken away. "Fernheart!" She said with delight. She pressed her face into her mother's fur and started purring. "You are in StarClan now." She looked up, seeing sadness and happiness in her mother's eyes.
"Wha-" "You were killed by Storm." Her mother told her. "But, I need to go back! I want to be with Flame and Nightcloud!" She yowled. "I'm sorry, but you can't." She said something quietly that Shadow couldn't hear. "What?" She asked, but her mother only turned away and lead her to the other cats. "This is Bluestar, remember from the elders' tales about the ancient Clans, ThunderClan, RiverClan, WindClan, and ShadowClan?" "Hello, Bluestar!" Shadow said with amazement. "Hello young one." Bluestar replied. Her mother introduced her to all the other cats, mostly from the ancient Clans. She finally got to the last one. "And you remember your sister, Waterkit." Shadow looked at her sister.
"I've missed you." They meowed at the same time. "Well, you better go and talk to the other cats." Waterkit told her. "The ones from the ancient Clans have some interesting stories to tell"
OoOoOoOoO
Shadow watched the cats in StormClan and in the rogues. She saw Nightcloud, walking around sadly. She looked over at Flame, who was carrying out the orders from Storm like he always did. Shadow sighed. She missed being alive, feeling the wind in her fur...... She watched as Nightcloud fell asleep and decided something. Once he was asleep, she padded into his dream. She saw him hunting a rabbit and after he caught it, she padded over to him from behind him.
"Well done." She said. He turned around and bounded over to her. "Shadowpaw!" He exclaimed. "Yes. I came to tell you something." "What?" He asked. "First, I wanted to tell you that you shouldn't miss me too bad. I will see you as often as I can, and come visit you. And also, you need to know that the fight with the rogues is not over. There will be another fight." She saw Nightcloud's face remain happy.
"As long as you will still see me, I'm fine. And also, I will try my hardest to avenge your death." He said, a small growl in his voice as he remembered how she died. "No! You do not know how strong Storm is! He will kill you with one hit!" She told him. "I don't care. As long as I come to StarClan and be with you."
"Don't be mousebrained!" She said, more feircly than she meant to. "You need to protect your Clan for now. Your death will be at a different time." She told him. She started to fade and she heard his voice yowling, "Shadowpaw, don't leave me!" "I won't. I will always be with you." She said and she was back at the clearing with StarClan.
* Nightcloud loved Shadow and Shadow loved him. Flame also loved her, but she didn't know. Now it's too late. *
Chapter three
~Two moons later~
Shadow heard pawsteps behind her and turned around. “Hello, Firestar.” She said. He was one of the most legendary leaders from the ancient Clans.
“Well, I see you’re having a hard time, watching the other cats that you loved.” Firestar said to her. “What do you mean ‘cats’?” She asked him. The leader chuckled. “There is more than one cat, but you were oblivious to your feelings to him. We could sense that.” Shadow pricked her ears. “Who?” She asked. “Flame.” He told her. “Flame?!” She jumped up, surprised.
“Yes. It was him.” Shadow looked back at her life. Now it seemed so obvious, but then, she hadn’t seen it. How could she have been that stupid?! “I want to go back.” She told him urgently. “You can’t.” He also mumbled something that she couldn’t hear, just like Fernheart. “What?” She asked him, wondering. “Not now.” He told her and got up. “I have to go talk to Brambleclaw.” Shadow was excited. She thought of all the cats from the ancient Clans. Firestar was Squirrelflight’s father, and Brambleclaw was Tigerstar’s son. No one had ever foreseen those two get together for their fathers had hated each other. Shadow just dipped her head.
“Yes, Firestar.” She said to him. She watched him pad away and turned to watch the other cats. She thought about Tigerstar. He did not walk with StarClan because he had tried to kill his leader so he could rule ThunderClan. Shadow sighed. He watched Storm organizing a patrol. ‘Not again!’ She wailed to herself. She watched them head to StormClan territory. She looked over at her mother. Fernheart would never know…….......
Shadow padded by Nightcloud to the edge of the territory. “Nightcloud.” She whispered in his ear. He whipped around, trying to see who was there. “It’s me, Shadowpaw.” She whispered. The tom relaxed. “You need to go alert the Clan that the rogues are coming.” He had an alarmed look on his face that quickly changed to happiness. “Now I can finally kill him!” He said excitedly and started bounding over to the camp.
“NO! WAIT!” Shadow yowled, but he didn’t look back. She turned around and saw the rogues headed by Storm. ‘When will he give up?!’ She thought to herself. She followed Nightcloud and waited for him. He streaked out of the leader’s den with Streamstar behind him. She quickly called to the Clan and they came out of the dens right as the rogues bursted into the camp. She looked for Nightcloud and saw him running over to Storm. ‘He’ll get killed!’ She ran over there and watched him fight the head of the rogue cats. She noticed he was losing, so she went closer and started fighting with him. She scented her sister, Waterkit and turned her head slightly to see her and Fernheart. They watched approvingly at her fierceness. She and Nightcloud laid down the final blow and Storm fell down. He slowly got up and staggered over to them.
"This isn't over." He said, his voice gurgling as blood bubbled out of his mouth and spattered on the ground in scarlet drops. He fell to the ground and his eyes slowly glazed over. He let out a bloody sigh and stopped breathing. Shadow looked at Storm with a look of disgust on her face. She felt herself fading and she was back at the clearing with the StarClan cats. “Well, there you are.” She heard one of the cats. She couldn’t make out who it was.
“We were going to tell you this, but you left.” She heard Waterkit’s voice. “You can go back, but with prices.” Bluestar meowed. “What do you mean ‘prices’?” Shadow asked, puzzled. “You can go back, but if something happens, like if a cat you love dies, you can’t come back until your time is up. If you kill yourself on purpose, you will just come back, unscathed.” Bluestar finished. “Would you like to leave now?” Firestar asked. “I would like to say good bye to everyone.” She answered. “Very well.” He flicked his tail to let her know that she could do that.
OoOoOoOoO
When she had said good bye to everyone, Shadow padded with Fernheart to the edge of the forest and touched noses with her. “Good bye, Shadowpaw.” Her mother said, sadness in her eyes. “This isn’t truly good bye. We will see each other one day.” Shadow told her, trying to comfort her mother. Shadow gave one last look at the forest, and walked away.
Chapter four
Shadow walked into the camp of StormClan. Nightcloud padded out of the warriors’ den and stretched. “Shadowpaw?” He exclaimed at ran over to her. “I thought that you had died.” He told her. “They let me come back.” She told him. “Let’s go hunting!” He meowed and they ran out of camp. “So, when we get back, I’ll talk to Streamstar about you being a warrior.” He told her. “Thanks,” she replied.
OoOoOoOoOoO
Shadowstorm and Nightcloud ran out of camp. She loved the feeling of wind in her fur. They wandered out deeper into the territory. Nightcloud was stalking a mouse as a fox stepped into the clearing. The fox and Nightcloud started fighting fiercly. After a few minutes of screeching and clawing and biting, the fox had won. Shadowstorm took a threatening step toward it and it ran. She ran over to Nightcloud and licked his ear. As she buried her muzzle into his fur, she heard her mother’s voice say “I’m sorry, Shadowstorm.” Shadowstorm looked up with cold eyes. "How could you?" she demanded/spat. She would never forgive StarClan for taking him away.
OoOoOoO
Shadowstorm padded with Flame to the StormClan camp. “You’ll get a warrior name soon.” She told him. "That will be nice," Flame meowed. "I always wondered what it would be like to be in a Clan." "It's pretty nice. But you don't have that much freedom," Shadowstorm told him. "I think I can handle it," he smiled and licked her ear as they padded into the camp.
*A few moons later*
The battle with the rogues came again. "How many times are they going to attack?!" Shadowstorm meowed to herself, annoyed. Her and Coldflame(Flame) ran out of the warriors' den. Coldflame instantly leapt at Stream, the rogue leader now that Storm had died.
"You piece of foxdung," Coldflame snarled. "I now have the chance to kill you." "Oh, do you?" Stream sneered. "I think not." And she slashed his throat. "Coldflame!" Shadowstorm laid the final blow on the rogue that she was fighting and ran over to him. A tear ran down her face. Too late, she realized that Stream was about to kill her. Darkness covered her. She woke in the clearing in StarClan. Nightcloud and Coldflame stood a little while off, pelts bristling. She could tell that they had been arguing. "What's wrong?" she asked them. "Which are you going to choose? Me or him?" Coldflame meowed to her, pointing to Nightcloud.
